Last month tragedy struck in paradise, claiming the life of wife and mother Maleka Jackson.
While Maleka was celebrating her 15 year wedding anniversary with her husband Tiran Jackson in the Bahamas, the engine on their tour boat suddenly exploded, killing Maleka and leaving her husband severely injured.
What was intended to be a romantic getaway turned into a tragedy within seconds. Tiran suffered severe burns and is undergoing a leg amputation.
Her family and friends described Maleka as a “loving mom, dedicated wife, and supportive friend” and her sudden death has shocked thousands, including her Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. sisters, who held nationwide vigils in her honor.
Tiran still grieving, expressed to PEOPLE magazine some sentiments of his late wife.
“Maleka would be I guess what I call a shooting star,” Grimes said. “She had a life that kind of stayed straight on the course and it was a life that brought a lot of joy and a lot of support and love into the lives of others.”
That love and support she gave came full circle when family, friends and even strangers began donating money to support the GoFundMe account created to collect money for her husband’s hospital care and recovery and to help raise her son. In just eight days, the family raised over $140,000 in support of Maleka, which will assist in covering medical and travel expenses.
Maleka leaves behind her husband and a 12-year-old son who was staying back at home with family during the time of the accident, and loved ones who will continue to keep her memory alive.
As one of the donators on the fundraiser page wrote, “She will be greatly missed and her legacy will live on forever.”
