The Staten Island hospital that treated Eric Garner shortly before his July 2014 death has been ordered to pay his family $1 million.
According to court documents obtained by the Associated Press, paramedics failed to administer CPR after Garner was placed in an illegal chokehold by NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo. Garner lost consciousness shortly after yelling that he couldn’t breathe several times.

“The E.M.T.s did not conduct the appropriate examination [and] failed to provide him with the necessary lifesaving procedures,” court documents read.
Hospital officials claim that Garner was still breathing when they arrived, which is why they didn’t immediately begin treatment. Records show that once Garner was placed on the stretcher, he went into cardiac arrest. Paramedics attempted to revive him in the ambulance, but he was declared dead within minutes of arriving at Richmond University Medical Center.

The $1 million that the hospital has been ordered to pay is the largest claim permitted as part of the center’s liability policy. The hospital declined to comment on the settlement.
A New York grand jury declined to indict any of the officers involved, and all of the E.M.T. workers still have their jobs. Last year, the city reached a $5.9 million settlement with Garner’s family.
