Writer and actress Issa Rae began a scholarship fund for the children of Alton Sterling, Wednesday, raising $200,000 in just nine hours and proving that there is strength in community.
Not wanting to feel helpless in the wake of Sterling’s fatal shooting, Rae announced on Twitter that she would be taking action. “Here it is,” she tweeted. “Donate to the #AltonSterling Family Scholarship Fund.”

Family, Community Demands Justice After Fatal Shooting of Alton Sterling
The #AltonSterlingFamily Scholarship page implores, “If you feel helpless, but want to play a small part in easing the burden of #AltonSterling’s family, consider donating to this scholarship fund for his 15-year old son (and his other kids). All funds raised will go to Alton Sterling’s family.”

The page has surpassed its goal of $200,000 and has currently raised $285,455 in funds.
