A New Jersey man is in custody after being connected to the death of Stephanie White, a 22-year-old who was killed after he drove off a bridge with her strapped into the passenger seat.
On Sunday, Jacob T. Garrett was driving at a high speed when he hit a parked car and flew into the icy Delaware River.
Next to him was White, who remained submerged in the vehicle as Garrett escaped. Witnesses say he asked for help as the car went down. When Garrett was rescued, he fled the scene. Emergency responders found White still strapped in the car — she later died at Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County in Willingboro.
As reported by Burlington County Times, a police dog tracked Garrett from the river to the Burlington Towne Center light-rail platform after the incident. Police stopped the train, removed Garrett and took him to the hospital for an evaluation.
Additional charges may be applied to Garrett’s case as the investigation continues.
