Jason Collins, the NBA player who recently revealed that he was gay, is taking his talents from the basketball court to the political-fundraising trail, reports USA Today.
Collins will work alongside First Lady Michelle Obama to kick off the Democratic National Committee’s annual Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Leadership Council gala on May 29 in New York.
The Council aims to credit the positive contributions the LGBT community has made in politics.
Collins, who last played on the Washington Wizards, made history last week as the first active male athlete to declare himself gay. Collins came out in a personal essay published in Sports Illustrated. He immediately received support from a wave of fellow athletes, as well as several political figures.
Former President Bill Clinton sent Collins his well wishes and President Barack Obama expressed how proud he was of Collins’ courage.
