Jill Scott admits she thought she couldn’t conceive
It’s a boy for R&B singer and actress Jill Scott and her fiancé, drummer Lil John Roberts, her manager confirmed to People.
Jett Hamilton Roberts was born at 4:20 P.M. on April 20, weighing in at 7 lbs., 8 oz. Scott discovered she was pregnant just before departing to Botswana where she filmed her new HBO’s series, “The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency,”
based on Alexander McCall Smith’s popular novels.
In an exclusive interview with ESSENCE.com in January, the three-time Grammy winner revealed that she had given up all hope of becoming a mother. “I didn’t think it was possible for me to have kids because I was told I couldn’t conceive,” said Scott, who planned to try an endometriosis treatment, which can enhance fertility. “I had given up hope of becoming a mother one day.”
After learning she had a miracle baby on the way, Scott explained why she waited six months before confirming her pregnancy at the Television Critics Association conference in Los Angeles in January .
“Because I’m 37 and considered a high risk for pregnancy, I wanted to make sure that everything was okay,” she told ESSENCE.com. “My closest friends and family knew and that was enough for me.”
The first-time parents began dating two years ago and announced their engagement at a New York City concert in June. Still, Scott says she’s ready for the challenge.
“I have to be aware that I’m someone’s mom and…of my energy and my attitude,” Scott told ESSENCE.com. “I really have to make an effort to be conscious of everything about me because it’s no longer about me, but my child.”
