Sen. Kamala Harris announced that “justice is on the ballot” as she made her case to Iowans for why she should be the next U.S. president.
Harris delivered the rousing speech at the Iowa Democratic Party’s Liberty and Justice event on Friday night, pushing her criminal justice background as the thing that makes her best suited for the job.
“To win, we are going to need a nominee on that stage, with Donald Trump, who has the ability to go toe to toe with Donald Trump –and Iowa, you are looking at her,” she said. “I have spent my career as a prosecutor. I’ve only had one client in my entire life, and that has been the people. Unlike other people, unlike others, I have never represented a corporation. I have never represented a special interest.”
She continued, “And I started my career fighting for the people. In fact the first I walked into a courtroom I spoke five words. ‘Kamala Harris, for the people.’ And those words, for the people, capture our system of justice.”
Harris is said to have refocused on an “all in” Iowa strategy following a major campaign shakeup announced earlier this week to lay off staff and significantly cut costs for her campaign. According to Politico, Harris’ campaign has almost completely shuttered its New Hampshire campaign, keeping only a small crew and canceling an upcoming visit.
“The campaign has made a strategic decision to realign resources to go all-in on Iowa, resulting in office closures and staff realignments and reductions in New Hampshire,” said spokesman Nate Evans. “The campaign will continue to have a staff presence in New Hampshire but the focus is and will continue to be on Iowa.”
And her attention seemed to be fully on Iowa as she told the room on Friday that she was the perfect candidate to be the next commander-in-chief.
“Here’s the bottom line, Iowa. I do believe that when we overcome these injustices, we will unlock the promise of America and the potential of the American people,” she said. “And I do believe thatthis is what we want and need. That is the America I see. That is the America I believe in. That is the America I know us to be. And that is why I am running for president of the United States.”
