At this point in the presidency, most people have come to expect a flurry of contentious tweets to come out of Donald Trump’s Twitter on any given day, at any given hour. And now, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) is arguing that perhaps Trump’s twitter privileges should be taken away.
“The President’s tweets and his behaviors about this are just further evidence of the fact that he uses his power in a way that is designed to beat people down instead of lift people up,” the 2020 presidential candidate said Monday on CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360“.
Harris referenced Trump’s attacks on the Ukraine whistleblower, which has been the topic du jour since allegations broke. Since then, the president has taken to Twitter to intermittently attack the unidentified intelligence community whistleblower.
“When you look at what he’s been tweeting today directed at the whistleblower, directed at so many people…I think that based on this and all we’ve seen him do before, including attacking members of Congress, that…his Twitter account should be suspended,” Harris said. “I think there is plenty of evidence to suggest that he is irresponsible with his words in a way that could result in harm to other people. And so the privilege of using those words in that way should probably be taken from him.”
When Cooper asked if the president’s base may see such a move as silencing Trump, Harris, insisted that a US President’s words “should be used in a way that is not about belittling, much less harming anyone.”
“If he’s not going to exercise self-restraint, then perhaps there should be other mechanisms in place to make sure his words don’t harm anyone,” she added.
