When Olivia Pope bravely decided to have an abortion on ABC’s Scandal last November, Kerry Washington received backlash on Twitter. But like her Scandal persona, Washington shuts it down!
“A lot of the people that may have reacted negatively are probably blocked on my Twitter, because I tend to be a pretty outspoken person when it comes to all kinds of human rights – women’s reproductive rights, immigrants’ rights, workers’ rights, rights for people of color, voting rights,” Washington detailed to HuffPost at the United State of Women Summit Tuesday.
She revealed that she blocks all forms of hate speech from her thread.
Kerry Washington Was Once Fired For Not Being “Hood” Enough
“I have no problem with people expressing a difference of opinion… but I do block people who express violence, sexism, racism – that’s inexcusable to me,” said Washington.
“I just think it’s important that we remind ourselves that we live in a country where choice is important, and I was grateful to be able to portray a character who makes a choice and doesn’t have shame about it,” she affirms.
Back in May, Washington announced that she would be taking a “teeny break” from social media, “feeling a call to be a bit more quiet.”
However, that hasn’t stopped Washington from being vocal about women’s rights, reproductive rights or domestic violence.
