After being together for more than a decade, in 2009 Thicke shared what kept the relationship strong. “The No. 1 thing is that any real relationship starts with respect,” he told ESSENCE.com. “You have to respect that person, and that way you’ll listen to them and you’ll care about what they’re saying.”
The couple was all smiles at The Casa de Milagros Picnic in Los Angeles in June 2008. Thicke told PEOPLE magazine that he often read to Paula, especially on vacation. Two books they enjoyed together are Marcel Proust’s “In the Shadow of Young Girls in Flower” and Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s “One Hundred Years of Solitude.”
Perhaps the secret to Robin and Paula’s loving marriage was respect for each other’s careers. While both maintained hectic schedules, they always seemed to make time for one another whenever possible. Here, the couple worked the room at an event during the 62nd Annual Cannes Film Festival in May 2009.
In February 24, 2014, Robin and Paula shocked fans by announcing their plans to seperate. “We will always love each other and be best friends, however, we have mutually decided to separate at this time,” the couple told PEOPLE in an exclusive statement.
