Is President Donald Trump racist? That’s the question on many people’s minds this week following the president’s controversial remarks about Haitian and African immigrants.
But Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s nephew says Trump is not racist — just “racially ignorant.”
“I don’t think Present Trump is a racist in the traditional sense as we know in this country,” King’s nephew Isaac Newton Farris Jr. told CNN on Friday. “I think President Trump is racially ignorant and racially uninformed. But I don’t think he is a racist in the traditional sense.”
Farris stood next to President Trump on Monday when the president signed the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park Act. He also attended a White House event honoring King on Friday following news that Trump called Haiti and African nations “shithole countries.”
Many, including the president of the NAACP, have called the president racist following his “shithole” comment.
“We know he’s a racist. He’s demonstrated that,” NAACP president Derrick Johnson told CNN on Friday.
