How do you know Mary J. Blige is a diva’s diva? Because today, she gave a free outdoor performance in Times Square on a rainy afternoon, and the following things happened: She did not slip on the soaking wet stage, she rocked sunglasses (it was totally overcast, but no matter), and her hair didn’t even
think about frizzing up! MJB hosted the fabulous mini-concert to celebrate her partnership with
Degree Women Natureffects, a new line of anti-perspirant/deodorants and matching body mists inspired by the calming effects that nature has on women–the stage was even strewn with trees, grass, and lush flowers to suggest an oasis in the middle of the urban jungle. After the show, we chatted with the legendary chanteuse about everything from her quest to find the perfect Hermes cuff to why Halle Berry is her ultimate beauty icon.
ESSENCE.COM: Great performance! But let’s get down to what’s really important…your gorgeous taupe nails. What polish did you use?
MARY J. BLIGE: OPI You Don’t Know Jacques ($5). It’s been my color for awhile now.
ESSENCE.COM: You smell fantastic–what’s your favorite fragrance?
MJB: My Life by Mary J. Blige. It’s a mix of musk, tuberose and woodsy notes. And I have a new scent coming out soon on HSN. Can’t give details yet, though!
ESSENCE.COM: We’ll be waiting! So, with spring coming, is there anything you’re really excited to wear?
MJB: This cuff [she shows off her chic, black and gold bracelet]!. I tore New York
up searching for it after I saw someone wearing it, but it was sold out. Finally, I called [stylist] June Ambrose, and she tracked it down for me. It shouldn’t be this way, but sometimes it’s about knowing the right people.
ESSENCE.COM: Who is your ultimate beauty icon?
MJB: Halle Berry. And not just because she’s beautiful, but because she always knows what works for her body. You’ll never see her not looking perfect.
ESSENCE.COM: Speaking of perfect, your complexion is flawless! How do you take care of your skin?
MJB: Really, I just wash my face every night…I love skincare products by Carol’s Daughter, Clarins and Estee Lauder. I never go to sleep with makeup on. Also, I like to “think” beautiful, so I can project it outwards.
ESSENCE.COM: Aside from skincare, what’s the one product you couldn’t live without?
MJB: Lip gloss. When I’m not in full-makeup for performance or appearances, lip gloss is basically the only thing I wear. MAC is my favorite!
