A Memphis woman has been arrested for transporting her grandchildren in pet kennels. Leimome Cheeks, 62, says she told the children, ages 8 and 9, to travel in the kennels due to lack of room in her trunk. The Memphis Police Department say Cheeks and the children travelled nearly 30 miles on a hot day where temperatures reached a high of 95 degrees. Cheeks is charged with two counts of child endangerment, the Memphis Police Department said. (CBS News)
Parkland drama students gave a show-stopping surprise performance of “Seasons Of Love” at the Tony Awards on Sunday night (June 10). Their rendition of the classic song from Broadway hit, Rent, came after their theater teacher, Melody Herzfeld, received the excellence in theater education prize. Herzfeld, who will receive $100,000 for her drama program, says winning the honor is a “defining moment” of her life. “All the goodness and tragedy that has brought me to this point will never be erased.” (New York Times)
Kerry Washington is set to return to Broadway in American Son alongside Steven Pasquale. The production, written by Christopher Demos-Brown, centers two parents searching for their missing son and will explore “the big questions of who we are as a nation, by exploring the intimate relationships within a family caught at the crossroads of love, loss, identity and community.” The play will be directed by Tony Award-winning Kenny Leon, who directed Denzel Washington’s A Raisin In The Sun. A group of more than 600 migrants are stranded in the Mediterranean Sea after Italy refused to accept them into their population due to tightening border regulations. The majority of people aboard the ship named Aquarius are from African and Middle Eastern countries. Doctors Without Borders, the organization operating the search-and-rescue mission, says there is only about two or three days’ worth of food and water left on the ship and a number of passengers need medical attention. Beyonce and Jay-Z share their most intimate photos in the On The Run Tour Book. The new candid images show the power couple, who is currently performing the European leg of their On The Run II tour, lounging casually and barely dressed in bed. Other shots include Bey riding on a motorcycle with Hov and laying naked on the beach. It’s the most revealing side of the two notoriously private music powerhouses. (ELLE)
Ex-NFL player Kellen Winslow Jr. was arrested by police and booked by the San Diego Sheriff’s Department on suspicion of burglary while house hunting. Winslow was reportedly looking at a house, which belongs to a friend of his wife’s, for his mother-in-law when a neighbor called the police saying she did not recognize him as a resident. Winslow spent five hours in a North County jail before posting bail, but his lawyers emphatically deny the charges. (The Root)
