As Michael Brown Sr. awaits the grand jury verdict on whether to indict Ferguson, Missouri police officer Darren Wilson for the killing of his unarmed teenage son, Michael Brown Jr. he is spending the time giving back to the community that has supported him since the beginning. Brown took to Canfield Green Apartments, the complex where his son was killed to hand-out free turkeys for the holidays along with his wife, Cal.
“This will be our first Thanksgiving without our son,” Brown said Saturday. “The family just had to roll up our sleeves and help the community. We thought this was the best for us, to just help back out. We love the support, came to give back.” 70 turkeys from their church as well as some they personally bought were passed out.
Brown Sr. joined St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay and former NFL player Demetrious Johnson who have both been giving out turkeys to the community for 23-years and 14-years respectively. “This is just the beginning,” his wife Cal Brown said. “We have a lot more community initiatives that we plan on doing.” Brown’s wife mentioned the late teen had planned to give up Christmas to help the homeless this year along with his siblings. Brown mentioned taking part in community efforts as a way to keep his son’s legacy alive.
