This year’s Super Bowl halftime show was one for the record books. Destiny’s Child reunited on the stage for the first time in seven years, and while their performance was thrilling, it was not without criticism.
Much of the negative feedback about the ladies’ reunion has focused on Michelle Williams, who told Billboard that it doesn’t phase her one bit.
“I don’t care what anybody else says. I don’t let it get me down. It was a beautiful thing,” said Williams.
She also revealed that rehearsing for the event was full of laughs and joy between her fellow group mates, Kelly Rowland and Beyonce.
“When three good girlfriends are together, you’re free and you don’t care who’s around; you’re just trying to catch up and be goofy. I had a blast.”
In the weeks leading up the the Super Bowl, Williams admits she had a hard time keeping the speculated reunion under wraps.
“I was just trying to protect the integrity of Beyonce’s show,” Williams explained. “She really wanted it to be a surprise. Had I not had to promote ‘Fela!,’ I would not have had to answer those questions. So when people said, ‘Hey, Michelle, is it going to happen?’ I wasn’t going to say ‘yes.’ It wasn’t my show. [Beyonce] didn’t want anybody to know.”
In the days following the Super Bowl reunion, Beyonce and Destiny’s Child experienced a surge of album sales according to Billboard. Beyonce’s catalog of albums increased 197% while Destiny’s Child saw a whopping 328% jump, in part due to the release of their new album Love Songs.
