The gig: I am a radio host on Sway in the morning. Laughing and learning with the legends that are my co-hosts is great within itself, but then adding folks to the mix like Tony Robbins, Tracee Ellis Ross and Angela Bassett is indescribable.
The journey: During a particularly muggy period in my life, I started taking self-talk very seriously because it’s the root of our moods and our moods are the wheels behind our actions. That inspired me to create Love, Light and That Good Sh*t, a mixtape of audio affirmations. It’s colorful, modern, raw and authentic.I wanted to create a sound that served as a companion through life challenges.
The best advice she’s ever received: Don Miguel Ruiz, author of The Four Agreements, talks about not taking other people’s negativity personally because we’re pretty much all psychology wounded but rather try to find the pieces of ourselves that broke off long before our current situation. That perspective helped me navigate life with empathy and negativity blinders.
Her lesson learned: I asked Diddy a pretty untimely question when we were interviewing him on his birthday. The entire conversation was in the spirit of conversation and there I was asking him to share what he sucks at. He completely checked out and I suddenly felt like I was a green pop star wannabe auditioning for Making The Band. I learned to really stay in tune with the energy of a conversation and match my questions to fit the flow of that mood. My co-host Heather B. immediately made a joke that saved the day.
Juggling personal and professional life: Making use of my Passion Planner and creating my to-do list for the next day the night before. I also try to call a loved one every time I have to walk somewhere whether it’s to the train, the store or the kitchen. That five minutes of appreciation counts.
Her previous career: I had a lot of stressful fun in the journalism world. I worked as an editor over at VIBE about five years ago and wrote for a bunch of different publications. The solo work of a writer is both torture and wondrous.
Her downtime: I listen to a plethora of podcasts, hike with my sister, holler at adult coloring books, watch documentaries/YouTube makeup tutorials and stalk foodie Instagram accounts.
Her career highlight: Being nominated a couple times for the Best Music Writing book series was huge for me. Also being selected amongst many for my job at Sway is a huge accomplishment for me as well along with the opportunities that have sprouted since then namely working with major networks and being inspired to create She’s Beauty And The Beast.
Her best advice: Embrace delayed gratification. Know the history of those you admire because success leaves clues.
Her tech fix: Snapchat is the best social media app ever. Hands down. I’m also a major Spotify whore. I also like the Stop, Breathe, Think meditation app and My Fitness Pal!
Her beauty bag: Right now, I’ll say L’Oreal True Match concealer, MAC Stone lipstick, Tarte Maracuja eye cream and Benefit’s They’re Real! Mascara.
Her power style accessory: My black conductor hat from Zara always takes things up a notch and saves me time because I don’t have to fleek my edges!
Her superpower: Empathy. Re-learning how to forgive people and myself every single day.
Her theme song: “Apparently” – J. Cole
