Morgan Freeman escaped a near-death experience unscathed this weekend.
According to The Guardian, the 78-year-old actor was on a twin-engine plane en route to Mississippi when a tire blew at takeoff. Freeman and the pilot had to make an emergency landing just before nightfall on Saturday in Tunica, Mississippi.

In a statement, the Oscar winner said he was on his way to film a segment for the new Nat Geo show, The Story of God. He descibed the incident as “scary” but safe.
“Sometimes things don’t go as planned and a tire blew on takeoff, which caused other problems but thanks to my excellent pilot, Jimmy Hobson, we landed safely without a scratch. I cannot say the same about my plane,” he said.
Federal Aviation Administration President Kathleen Bergen said the landing gear collapsed and ran off the runway but gave no further comment due to a federal investigation into the incident.
Freeman thanked fans for their “concern and prayers for our safety.”
