Sometimes a mother’s gotta do what she gotta do, and in this case, Illinois woman Marshanice Mackey that meant calling the police on her son, Derek Burton.
According to KSDK news, Mackey noticed her gun was missing soon after 18-year-old Burton made suicidal threats and threatened to shoot up his school. His outburst was reportedly caused by a fight he had with his girlfriend.
Burton was arrested outside of his girlfriend’s home hours after Mackey alerted police and two local high schools canceled classes. He has been charged with three counts of aggravated assault, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of a threat against a school or person.
“He’s not a bad kid, he’s done something and he’s made a mistake,” Mackey said. She also doesn’t regret her decision. “A lot of parents don’t agree that we need to set certain structures for their children, or, ‘That’s my son so I’m not going to call the police on them because I don’t want them to get caught up in the system,’ let that happen. That’s not going to be the case with me.”
