The mother of 16-year-old Jada, a Houston rape victim whose sexual assault video went viral on social media, is speaking out.
Sukiedia, who chose not to reveal her last name, spoke exclusively to MSNBC’s Ronan Farrow on Friday in hopes of encouraging other young women to speak out about sexual assault.
“It’s been happening to so many ladies around the world… she [Jada] wanted to make a difference so that other young ladies can come forth and say what’s actually going on.”
The teen, who only learned of her assault after seeing photos of herself laying unconscious on the floor on social media, was shocked to see a hashtag was created to poke fun at the incident.
And although the names of minors sexually assaulted are not typically released, Jada decided to speak publicly saying, “There’s no point in hiding. Because of the picture everybody has already seen my face and body. But that’s not what I am or who I am,” the brave teen said in a recent interview with KHOU 11 News.
Since coming forward, Jada has unsuspectingly rallied nationwide support through social media with the hashtag #justiceforjada. Women of all ages pose in photos showing flexed biceps to applaud Jada for her bravery and strength.
Currently, no formal charges have been made against the accused. The juvenile sex crimes unit in Houston is actively investigating this case.
