The 25th annual Soul Train Awards aired last night on BET and the stars came out to shine and have a good time.
In typical Soul Train fashion, the awards show highlighted R&B’s finest, including Best R&B/Soul Female Artist Beyonce, Best R&B/Soul Male Artist Miguel and Frank Ocean for his Album of the Year, Channel Orange.
Taped earlier this month in Las Vegas, this year’s show served as a tribute to the “hippest trip in America’s” creator Don Cornelius, who committed suicide in February. Charlie Wilson took to the stage in his honor and recalled the first time he and The Gap Band performed on Soul Train. “We were all nervous and Don Cornelius calmed us down, and we went on and did our performance and we made history,” he said.
Along with Wilson, two of the night’s best performances came from Best New Artist Elle Varner and Lifetime Achievement award recipients New Edition.
