The Maryland couple discovered dead in their hotel room in the Dominican Republic last Thursday, the same day they were meant to return home, died of respiratory failure and pulmonary edema, an autopsy concluded.
According to CNN, Nathaniel Holmes, 63 and Cynthia Day, 50 missed their check out time at the Bahia Principe hotel. When hotel workers went to check on the room, they found the couple unresponsive.
The Dominican Today, a local newspaper, reported that there were no signs of violence in the couple’s room.
The Dominican Republic National Police later confirmed that an autopsy determined that the couple suffered from respiratory failure and pulmonary edema.
“We are deeply saddened by the incident at one of our hotels in La Romana, Dominican Republic, and want to express our deepest condolences to their family and friends,” Bahia Principe Hotels said in a statement, according to CNN.
