South African leader Nelson Mandela, now 94, underwent endoscopic surgery this morning to remove gall stones, just days after receiving treatment for a lung infection, reports CNN.
“The procedure was successful, and Madiba is recovering,” said presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj.
Mandela has been hospitalized since December 8 due to a history of lung problems after becoming ill with tuberculosis in 1988, but is receiving round-the-clock care.
