Nelson Mandela’s condition remains “unchanged,” said the South African Government Monday, reports CNN.
Mandela, 94, was taken to a hospital on Saturday to be treated for a recurring lung infection. At the time, officials said the leader was in “serious but stable” condition. Today, Mandela is reportedly breathing on his own.
President Jacob Zuma’s office released a statement on Saturday about the ailing leader. “Doctors are doing everything possible to make him better and comfortable,” it said.
Numerous members of Mandela’s family visited him on Sunday. According to CNN, Mandela’s daughter and ambassador to Argentina, Zenani Dlamini, returned to South Africa to be with her father.
Mandela’s was last discharged from the hospital on April 6 after a 10-day stay for pneumonia. He was previously hospitalized in December for a lung infection and to have gallstones removed.
The African National Congress released a statement as well, “We will keep President Mandela and his family in our thoughts and prayers at this time and call upon South Africans and the peoples of the globe to do the same for our beloved statesman and icon, Madiba.”
