Dear White People has been renewed for a 10-episode third season. Netflix shared the news in a video with the show’s narrator, Giancarlo Esposito, who also portrays a member of a secret on-campus society, The Order of X. Based on the 2014 film of the same name created by Justin Simien, the show centers on a group of Black students at a predominantly white Ivy League university discussing race, class and sexuality amid rising racial tensions. No word yet on when season 3 will premiere. (Variety)
Ava Duvernay becomes the first Black woman to direct a $100 million-grossing film with A Wrinkle In Time. The Disney blockbuster, released in February, passed the $100 million mark this week. Melania Trump wore a jacket that read “I Really Don’t Care. Do U?” as she traveled to the U.S.-Mexico border on Thursday (June 21). The $36 olive green Zara piece has been viewed as a highly insensitive sartorial choice considering she was headed to tour an immigrant children’s shelter. Though Melania’s press team said there was “no hidden meaning” behind the outerwear, President Trump tweeted that the message was a shot to “the Fake News Media.” (CNN)
A white Ohio police officer has been fired after detaining his daughter’s Black boyfriend without cause. John Kovach Jr. pulled over Makai Coleman while looking for his 18-year-old daughter and told him he was taking him to jail without cause. “You’re going to jail,” Coleman recalls Kovach saying. “Have a seat in my car. We’ll make s–t up as we go.” Kovach is currently contesting his firing. (New York Daily News)
