The film, which is currently shooting, stars Andre 3000 as a young Hendrix in England between 1966-1967 before he became widely successful.
Hendrix’s estate released a statement declaring they are ensuring the legacy of the rocker remains intact. “Experience Hendrix, LLC, the family-owned company entrusted with safeguarding the legacy of Jimi Hendrix and administrator of the Jimi Hendrix music and publishing catalog, has made it known many times in the past that no such film, were it to include original music or copyrights created by Jimi Hendrix, can be undertaken without its full participation.”
So in lieu of Hendrix songs, Andre 3000 will sing several covers from major artists and groups like The Beatles, Muddy Waters, Chip Taylor and more.
Andre 3000 reaffirmed that the film covers Hendrix’s early career in a statement by saying, “The story line of All Is By My Side focuses on the early days of Jimi’s career, when his performances largely consisted of innovative interpretations of existing songs. These are the performances that got him discovered, blew everyone’s minds and helped him become the icon he became.”
There’s no word on when the film will be released.
