Ohio Men Recognized For Rescuing 3-Year-Old Girl And Unconscious Mom
Rayfield Hallman and Steven William Wood were driving down the street when they saw LaTonya Perry and her daughter in what looked like a life-and-death situation.
LaTonya Perry, 42 was on the way to the store with her 3-year-old daughter when she suffered from a grand mal seizure. The sudden onset left her completely unresponsive and unconscious in front of her Maple Heights, Ohio home for what she estimates to be more than an hour before passer-bys Rayfield Hallman and Steven William Wood saw her and decided to help.On Wednesday night, the two cousins were honored by the Maple Heights City Council. According to FOX 8 Cleveland, it was the first time Perry met her good samaritans face-to-face.“Just so thankful that they was my Guardian Angels and just stopped and helped me and my daughter,” Perry told reporters. Although the woman who never experienced a seizure previously was able to share her gratitude over the phone, both parties were happy to reunite in person.“I’m glad that we could do good and be good to the community,” Wood, 18, said during the emotional meeting. When Hillman and Wood first noticed Perry on the evening of December 23, the men who live in the neighborhood were driving down the street that Perry lives on.“The situation just didn’t look right, it’s a dark time, the doorway’s wide open, she’s laid in the doorway,” Hallman told FOX 8 on the night he was honored.Assessing the situation, the cousins realized they had to step into action to help save the woman, her young daughter who was outside the home in 35-degree weather, and the family pup who had escaped from the house. They called 9-1-1 and Perry was rushed to the hospital. That is where she woke up surrounded by friends, unaware of what transpired between walking out of the house and waking up in a hospital bed. During Wednesday night’s ceremony, the City Council read a proclamation from the Cleveland Chapter of NAACP and presented the men with a gift card to a local restaurant. Perry thanked God for the men and said, “You’re not doing it for the recognition, you not doing for the attention, you doing because it’s something God put in your heart,”
