TLC is doing reality television in a big way–literally. Last Tuesday TLC aired a new reality TV show, “One Big Happy Family.” The show follows the loving couple Norris and Tameka Cole, and their teenage children Amber, 16, and Shayne, 14 as they struggle through the reality of morbid obesity. Collectively weighing over a half a ton, each member of the Cole family tips the scale at over 300 pounds.
The premise of the six-episode series, is to document how the family unit will handle receiving the medical news that they are all on the verge of developing diabetes if their aren’t changes in their health. Surprisingly, the children become a catalyst for change, encouraging Tameka their working mother, and Norris their stay-at-home dad to shed more than a few pounds.
The real life Klumps, filmed the 30-minute segments in their southern residence of Charlotte, NC where slimming down surrounded by soul and fast food is no easy feat. However, with love and dedication greater than their weight, the Cole family embarks on comical and courageous journey that becomes inspirational to watch.
TLC, known for reality television shows “Little People, Big World” and “18 Kids and Counting,” make a conscious effort to capitalize on groups who don’t always fit in normal society.
Tune in every Tuesday on TLC at 9pm EST.
