Though she’s no longer ruling daytime television as host of The Oprah Winfrey Show, a co-sign from Lady O still carries tremendous weight. So it can only be a good thing when the queen of media expresses her love of the Black indie film Middle of Nowhere by Ava DuVernay, the first Black woman to win Best Director at the Sundance Film Festival.
“Saw your movie,” Oprah tweeted to DuVernay earlier this week. “Excellent job especially with no money. Bravo to you my sistah.”
Oprah later declared the the film “powerful and poetic” and urged her 14 million followers to see it.
Middle of Nowhere tells the story of a young newlywed (Emayatzy Corinealdi) who puts her life on hold as she waits for her husband’s (Omari Hardwick) release from an eight-year prison sentence.
The film, which is garnering lots of Oscar buzz, was reportedly made for only $200K. It opens in select cities this weekend.
