Yesterday, hundreds of women joined us in Los Angeles for our ninth annual Black Women in Hollywood event. From socialites to celebrities, women gathered to celebrate a common goal: uplifting and encouraging Black women. While most ladies pulled it together and looked their best, there were a few standouts that we couldn’t stop talking about. We gathered our panel of celebrity hairstylists to weigh in on various looks and explain why each look rocked.
Meet Our Panel!
Cynthia Alvarez: Cynthia Alvarez has worked with styling that heads of Alicia Keys, Shakira, Rita Ora and Becky G. Her career began while watched her family prep their hair and then eventually became the neighborhood hair braider. A friend introduced Cynthia to the world of celebrity hairstyling and Cynthia never looked back. Now she serves as a brand ambassador for Dove Hair Care.
Andre Walker: After graduating from the Pivot Point Academy, Andre worked to open his own Salon in downtown Chicago, quickly becoming well-known among Chicago’s fashionable elite for his hair and style expertise. Andre began styling Oprah’s hair years ago, and has won seven Daytime Emmy Awards for his work and also received the 2009 Thurgood Marshall Fashion Icon Award. His book, Andre Talks Hair, was published by Simon and Schuster in 1997.
Larry Sims: Larry Sims originally began his entertainment career fifteen years ago in Chicago as a professional dancer and choreographer, but then he quickly realized that wasn’t for him. He eventually began developing his first love of crafting beautiful hairstyles, leading him to have a client list of top celebs including, Queen Latifah, Christina Millian, Gabrielle Union and Mary J Blige. No he serves as the celebrity spokesperson for Smooth ‘N Shine.
Shivonne Jackson: Shivonne J is a professional hair stylist of six years hailing from Houston Texas, who coins herself as the “weave master.” Honing her own cutting, coloring and natural hair care skilled set that imparts from other beauticians. Future plans for the budding celebrity stylist, include launching her hair skills internationally, and adding layers of confidence onto women. “I want to change the world, by making women feel good about their appearance, so they can be bold and confident in the work place & life in general,” she says.
