The family of Tamir Rice called upon use-of-force experts to determine that the shooting death of the 12-year-old Cleveland boy was “objectively unreasonable.”
One Year After Shooting Death Of Tamir Rice, Family Still Demands Justice
Despite court-ordered report findings that stated that the incident was “tragic but reasonable,” Cleveland.com reports that family brought in the experts to dispel that notion.
The new outside report finds that the officers placed themselves in harm’s way therefore their use of deadly force should be deemed excessive, according to a 2008 U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling.
In addition, the report reveals that the officers actions were based on corruption of culture and a failure to execute tactical decision-making.
Prosecutor for Cuyahoga County Timothy J. McGinty, who commissioned the initial report has been asked by both the family and community activists to remove himself from the case to no avail.
Rice’s mother, Samaria, is currently involved in a pending lawsuit against the city as well as the two officers who were involved in the shooting and the Cleveland police department as a whole.
