President Donald Trump continues to act like a petulant child in the face of a long-overdue impeachment inquiry, most recently by co-signing a FOX News Guest who claimed that impeachment would lead to a “Civil War-like fracture in this Nation from which our Country will never heal.”
“I have never seen the Evangelical Christians more angry over any issue than this attempt to illegitimately remove this President from office, overturn the 2016 (…) Election, and negate the votes of millions of Evangelicals in the process,” Trump tweeted, sharing Robert Jeffress’, a Southern Baptist preacher, words with the country. “If the Democrats are successful in removing the President from office (which they will never be), it will cause a Civil War like fracture in this Nation from which our Country will never heal.”
Trump’s tweets caused outrage across the aisle. Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) tweeted, “I have visited nations ravaged by civil war. @realDonaldTrump I have never imagined such a quote to be repeated by a President. This is beyond repugnant.”
House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff said impeachment hearings could begin as soon as this week, CNN reports. According to Trump, he “deserves to meet” the anonymous whistleblower who exposed his collusion with Ukraine to investigate former Vice-President, and current 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden.
As ESSENCE previously reported, during a July 25 phone call with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump pressed Zelensky to investigate Biden for allegedly encouraging the firing of Ukraine’s top prosecutor, Viktor Shokin, who had been investigating Ukrainian natural gas company Burisma, which previously employed Hunter Biden.
