As the United States gears up for the 2020 presidential election and possibly removing the current stain of America out of office, many people are already picking front-runners. But in an election where 53% of white women voted for Donald Trump, Black women and other women of color are now having their voices heard more than ever.
In a new poll conducted by She The People, 264 women of color political organizers, donors, activists and party leaders overwhelming show that Sen. Kamala Harris is their front-runner in the 2020 election. Harris received 71.1% of the votes, while Sen. Beto O’Rourke came in second with 38.3%, former Vice-President Joe Biden had 25%, Sen. Cory Booker (24.2%), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (22.3%), Georgia Democrat Stacey Abrams (15.2%), and Sen. Bernie Sanders came in with an underwhelming 12.1%.
Of the 264 polled, 50% of the women identified as black, 40% as Latinx, 16% as Asian, and 5% as Native American. As we all know during the midterm elections turn out, Black women were present and accounted for, not only when it came to getting out and voting, but also breaking records when it came to winning elections. If this is any indicator of what’s to come in 2020, we can bet our dollar that once again Black women will put on their Superwoman capes, and try to help save the world.
Of course, the survey also includes nominees that polled women wouldn’t touch with a 10-foot pole when it comes to the people they wouldn’t consider as a 2020 Presidential nominee based on their inability to appeal to or reach women of color voters. And they include Michael Avenatti (43.2%), Michael Bloomberg (37.8%), Bernie Sanders (32.4%), Andrew Cuomo (20.3%), Joe Biden (17.6%), Tom Steyer (16.7%) and last but not least Elizabeth Warren (12.2%).
It’s interesting to see Biden and Sanders on both lists, but many Black women will never forget how Biden threw Anita Hill under the bus or the fact that Sanders still doesn’t appeal to some Black women.
Although Harris is on top in this recent poll, two weeks ago Harris stated she would be mulling over the possibility of throwing her hat into the ring during the holidays. And the same goes for Booker and O’Rourke.
