In what turned out to be a night of laughs, President Obama joked about Kim Kardashian, the 2008 primaries, the General Services Administration scandal, Donald Trump and the presumed Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.
“We both think of our wives as our better halves, and the polls show to an alarmingly insulting extent that the American people agree,” President Obama said referring to Romney. “We also both have degrees from Harvard. I have one, he has two. What a snob.”
Headlining the evening’s dinner was ABC funnyman Jimmy Kimmel, who took several hard jabs from the president but not without returning the favor by making light of President Obama’s approval ratings.
“There’s a term for President Obama, probably not two terms,” Kimmel joked.
Among the celebs who dazzled the red carpet were ESSENCE Music Festival headliner Mary J. Blige and her husband Kendu Isaacs, Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz, Viola Davis and her husband Julius Tennon, Holly Robinson Peete, John Legend, and Kerry Washington.
Proceeds from the dinner go toward scholarships for aspiring journalists and awards for excellence in the profession.
