After the grand jury’s decision not to indict Darren Wilson was announced yesterday, protestors and activists made an announcement of their own: Boycott Black Friday.
The Justice for Michael Brown Leadership Coalition is organizing a “No Justice, No Profit” campaign calling for citizens to boycott businesses from Thanksgiving Day until Sunday, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constituion. They ask that all supporters of Michael Brown and the people of Ferguson, Missouri show their support and not shop for the entire holiday weekend.
“We are asking you to withdraw your participation the entire weekend,” coalition member Dacia Polk said. “There will not be business as usual in America while our people are being killed. Until this nation begins to place value on Black lives, there will be no value placed on business.”
The movement began to trend quickly on social media Monday night. Several celebrities including Tyrese Gibson and Russell Simmons have shown their support for the boycott on Twitter and Instagram.
