The Chicago Tribune reports that Emanuel has offered short-term proposals on police reform tactics during a special news conference held on Wednesday.
“There’s a difference between whether someone can use a gun and when they should use a gun,” Emanuel continued. “And we as a city must train for that difference.” said Emanuel.
Emanuel was joined by interim police superintendent John Escalante to echo sentiments that officers will receive training to ensure that force issued via their firearms would “be the last option, not the first choice.”
Reform plans include proper taser training that will equip 1,400 cops with the device and a mandatory desk-duty sentence of 30 days for any officer involved in a shooting.
The Mayor made the announcement only a fews days after yet another police-involved shooting occured in which two people were killed.
“We have to hold them accountable,” he said.
Training for the officers is expected to begin in June 2016.
