READER QUESTION:
“I’m newly natural and not really feeling it. I big-chopped a month ago, but I’m not confident enough yet to leave the house. I wear wigs mostly! How did you find the confidence to wear your hair naturally?” — Ariel
CURLY NIKKI’S RESPONSE:
It takes loads of self-confidence to rock natural hair! In most cases, you must fake it till you make it. Pretty soon, the real confidence will come in – and not only will you notice, but everyone around you will too. Here’s how I found my natural hair swag:
1. Educated myself on care methods and styling options. I became an expert at looking after my curls. It’s the lack of skill and knowledge that will send you running back to that flat iron or relaxer.
2. Practiced positive self-talk and did my best to push the negative, self-defeating, and destructive thoughts from my mind.
3. Took less stock in other people’s opinions – that includes snide remarks and compliments. It was my thoughts and feelings that counted.
4. Found a support network of amazing women online. Check out CurlyNikki.com. It helps knowing that you’re not the only one going through such a life-altering process!
