Russell Simmons is assembling at least 100 celebrities—including Nicki Minaj, Jennifer Hudson and more—to ask President Barack Obama to change drug laws in America, reports the Associated Press.
On Tuesday, the group presented a letter to the president urging him to replace jail sentences with either intervention or rehabilitation for non-violent drug offenders.
The group is also asking the Commander-in-Chief to form a panel to take on clemency requests from inmates, in addition to supporting a measure allowing judges to waive the now mandatory minium sentencing for some drug law violators.
“It is critical that we change both the way we think about drug laws in this country and how we generate positive solutions that leave a lasting impact on rebuilding our communities,” said Simmons.
According to the mogul, the United States jails more of its citizens, mostly drug offenders, than any other country around the globe.
