Sandra Bland’s funeral drew hundreds of people this weekend as she was laid to rest in a Chicago suburb.
According to the Huffington Post, hundreds lined up outside of the DuPage African Methodist Episcopal Church in Lisle, Illinois to pay their final respects to the 28-year-old woman.
Bland, hailed from the Chicago area and was preparing to start a job in Texas when she was involved in a now infamous traffic stop. She was found dead in her jail cell three days following her July 10 arrest were she was pulled over for a minor traffic offense and ultimately charged with assaulting a police officer after a much-talked about altercation with the trooper.
So many mourners filed in for her funeral service that excess crowds were directed to the basement of the church where a live video feed broadcast the service.
Although a medical examiner has ruled Bland’s death a suicide, Waller Country District Attorney Elton Mathis has said more evidence needs to be gathered, examined and ultimately decided on by a grand jury.
Bland’s family is pursuing a second autopsy which will reveal further details surrounding her death.
Our condolences go out to the family of Sandra Bland.
