As a White woman raising a Black son, Sandra Bullock faces a unique parenting challenge.
The Gravity actress, who adopted her son, Louis, from New Orleans in 2010, opened up to BET about how she is tackling the issues of addressing racism with the now-5-year-old.
“He doesn’t understand why people judge each other based on color of their skin, but he knows they do,” she said.

She continued on, saying that she is not shying away from addressing the topic head-on because she wants her son to understand the challenges that he might face in his future, both race-related and beyond.
“I think if you don’t start the conversation early on, you’re doing them a disservice,” she said. “Once he leaves that house and I’m not with him, it’s his life, and how he approaches it is his decision. But I want to know that I did the best I could as his mom to educate him on the ugliness in the world and also the beauty.”
