Can’t get enough of one of Tyler Perry’s most popular families the Browns? If so, you’re not alone as Perry brings his hit series “Meet the Browns” back to TBS. Catch a sneak peek of the show before it premieres tonight at 10 P.M. EST.
Mr. Brown (David Mann) continues to bond with his daughter, Cora, (played by Mann’s wife, Tamala Mann). She was a love child from a brief fling Brown had with Madea, though Mann sometimes has to remember she is his daughter on set and not his wife.
“I have to keep him from kissing me as Mr. Brown. It’s one of the hardest things. I told him once I get into character I’m serious,” Tamela says with a laugh. “But he still wants to kiss me like I’m still his wife. I’m like, ‘No, you’re my dad.’”
“I was very nervous because I’m Mr. Brown, head of the Browns, but Tyler told me to just do my thing. I was more comfortable taping the television show because I like the energy of a live audience.” David Mann tells ESSENCE.com, as the show began taping following the big screen version of “Meet the Browns.”
Mr. Brown breaks out his tool belt when a mommy-to-be goes into labor. We hope an ambulance is nearby.
Brown’s nephew Will (Lamman Rucker) and his wife Sasha (Denise Boutte’) enjoy an intimate moment while the coast is clear. Sasha, a nurse, is ready to begin a family of her own with her doctor husband.
“Uncle Brown is like a dad to me,” Rucker says of his character. “I’m a gynecologist and my family is country, but I love them dearly.”
Mr. Brown joins in as members of a local fraternity break it down.
“I know that there is a fine line between a good comedian and a buffoon so I’m mindful of it, but I don’t like it to dictate how I do things,” Mann says. “Mr. Brown is not politically correct and neither is Madea.”
Edna (Juanita Jennings) has the libido of a woman half her age, and doesn’t let the fact that the nursing home she was living in burned to the ground slow her down.
Cora (Tamela) leaves behind her usual duds for a sassy look.

“We always explain to people we genuinely enjoy each other’s company. I would rather be with her than hang out with anybody else,” Mann says of working with his wife.
Mr. Brown (Mann) and daughter Cora (Tamala) fall into their typical banter, as she keeps her old man in check.
“Yes, she can be sweet and quiet and she’ll stop and pray for you, then shoot you with the pistol she’s packing!” Mann says with a laugh of his on-screen daughter Cora. “She’s the reason that Mr. Brown and Madea don’t kill each other.”

Cora (Tamela) keeps the house stocked with groceries and a kind word.
“Cora is easy for me because it’s my personality that I get to share with the world and I’m able to encourage different people,” Tamala Mann says of her character. “The personality of
Cora is that she’s not easily swayed and I’m also a strong person.”
Brown hopes children will learn from his mistakes.
Mr. Brown looks perplexed as he tries to figure out his visitor’s meditative practices.
Mr. Brown’s funkadelic style is unmatched, as his skin-tight pants don’t interfere with his ability to bust a move.
Brown (Mann) feels a spell coming on and prepares for the mental onslaught.
“I’ve developed my character from the personalities of my aunts, uncles and grandparents,” Mann says of Brown. “Most of the times the cast has no idea what I’m going to do when I walk on that stage because I don’t do dress rehearsals. So when they are laughing they are really laughing.”

“The great appeal with the Tyler Perry series is we see a bit of ourselves. You see Mr. Brown in your family. We all have that crazy aunt or uncle who is that over-the-top religious person. That’s the appeal of Tyler Perry,” Mann says.
