We love him for the Diddy Bop. We respect him as the businessman, and hip hop impresario—but arrested Diddy? No one saw that coming.
According to The New York Daily News, Sean “Diddy” Combs was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon following an altercation on Monday at his eldest son Justin’s football practice. The deadly weapon was a kettlebell, an exercise ball usually made of iron.
Diddy now faces three felony charges: one count of battery, making terrorist threats and three counts of assault with a deadly weapon.
The hip hop mogul reportedly went to the UCLA campus to speak with strength and conditioning coach Sal Alosi, whom he accused of mistreating his son Justin, a defensive back with the UCLA Bruins. Alosi had allegedly told Justin not to return to practice until the end of the summer. Alosi—who was suspended from the NFL in 2010 after tripping a Miami Dolphins player in the middle of a game—then refused to see Diddy and told him to leave. Diddy proceeded to the coach’s office, where Alosi again, advised him to exit and threatened to call security if he did not evacuate the premises. Diddy responded, “Fine, I’ll call the police” and Alosi snapped and went after Diddy with his hands. Diddy then grabbed the kettlebell and swung, just short of missing Alosi’s head—but that’s just one story.
Other stories say that according to UCLA sources, Diddy approached Alosi in his office while Alosi was on the phone and told Diddy to “hang on.” Diddy got upset, picked up the kettlebell and swung. Another source says that after Diddy watched the coach “riding Justin, screaming intensely at him” from the sidelines, Diddy accosted Alosi in his office and grabbed him.
According to reports, if the kettlebell swing was any more accurate, Diddy could have killed his son’s coach. However, sources say that he grabbed the kettlebell as a method of self-defense, and had no intention on injuring the coach.
Diddy was released from the Los Angeles County jail late Monday after posting a $50,000 bail.
