In one of tennis’ greatest upsets of all time, Serena Wiliams lost a US Open semi-finals match to unseeded opponent Roberta Vinci.
With the surprise defeat, Williams lost her chance at winning the calendar year grand slam to the Italian player, who beat the tennis champ 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
After winning the Australian Open, the French Open and Wimbledon, Williams was just two matches away from winning the first grand slam in 27 years.
Vinci, 32 who is ranked as the number 43 tennis player in the world, compared to Williams’ number one ranking, never made it past the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam before.
“For the American people, for Serena, for the Grand Slam. Today is my day. Sorry, guys,” Vinci said.
Williams, who had not lost a Grand Slam match since June 27, 2014, agreed that Vinci did a superb job on the court. She gave the devoted tennis player her deserved recognition.
“She played literally out of her mind,” Williams said.
We love you, Serena!
