Serena Williams, Misty Copeland and Simone Biles have always been superheroes in our eyes, now Marvel comics and espnW is making what we’ve already known a reality.
To commemorate the top 25 sport influencers who have made the biggest impact for women in the last year, some of the greatest athletes have been imagined as comic characters, ESPN announced.
Super Serena: Tennis Star Chases Down Man Who Took Her Cell Phone
Gymnast Simone Biles was celebrated for her accomplishment as an “18-year-old [who] became the first gymnast since 1992 to win a third straight national tittle.” Biles continued to make history this year when she won her third consecutive world all-around title.
In June, Misty Copeland was named principal dancer of the American Ballet Theatre–the first African American ballerina in company history to achieve that honor.
10 Badass Black Female Athletes Who Make Us Proud
Tennis star, Serena Williams, had a stellar season on the tennis court despite failing to achieve a calendar Grand Slam year but as ESPN points out, “she is the only player to rank in the WTA top 10 in wins on clay, grass, and hard courts.”
Other comic creations celebrate the newly appointed U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch who ordered an investigation into the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) on charges of corruption, money laundering, and fraud. Swimmer Simone Manuel is one of the few black female water athletes on a national platform and she recently set the American record for the 100-yard freestyle at the NCAA Women’s swimming and diving championship. Tamika Catchings has had a 14-year WNBA career and became the first player in the professional basketball division to score 1,000 career playoff points.
