Nevermind the spoiler alert. This news is too shocking to hide. On last night’s third season finale of Sleepy Hollow, in a twist no one saw coming, the show killed off it’s leading lady, brave cop Abbie, who’s played by actress Nicole Beharie.
Immediately, disappointed fans took to Twitter to react, posting abut their anguish, disappointment and even anger. Many threatened not to watch the show again if it does return for a season four (which has not yet been decided). Many hoped that it was a mistake and she will return again. Wrong.
A statement from 20th Century Fox and showrunner Clifton Campbell given to Variety confirmed that Abbie’s death was, in fact, final: “The finale featuring the tragic death of Abbie Mills was a very dramatic ending and a bold move for the show, but Sleepy Hollow has always been known for its shocking finales. We feel we provided a wonderfully poignant conclusion for Abbie and showed some of the best moments between the Witnesses that we’ve seen on-screen,” the statement read. “We thank Nicole Beharie for bringing Abbie and Sleepy Hollow to life. We are currently discussing season four, and should the series be picked up for another season, we have some exciting scenarios and new avenues we want to explore.”
In an interview with TVline, Beharie revealed that she’s at peace with the decision. “Sleepy Hollow has been an incredible experience in every way,” she said. “I loved playing Abbie. It’s been such a gift to have taken this wild ride… Alas, ‘Abbie Mills has done all she was meant to do.’”
