Legendary soul singer Percy Sledge passed away this morning in his home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, reports ABC News.
He was 73.
The Alabama native is best known for his song “When a Man Loves a Woman,” which he recorded in 1966. In fact, this week is the 49th anniversary of the chart-topping song which has appeared in several movie soundtracks. Though he continued recording up until the 90s, Sledge’s greatest hit was “When a Man Love a Woman.” Singer Michael Bolton covered it in 1991.
Sledge, a former nurse, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005 and is a member of the Alabama Music Hall of Fame.
The cause of his death is still unknown. Sledge is survived by his wife and children.
Our condolences to his family.
