WNBA all-star Skylar Diggins-Smith revealed that she played the entire 2018 season of the WNBA while pregnant.
Diggins-Smith revealed the awe-inspiring tidbit while also airing out her frustrations with how the league treats players who are also mothers. The baller took to Twitter on Saturday to address the backlash over her decision to sit out the entire 2019 WNBA season after giving birth back in April.
“People called me a quitter, said I gave up on my team, etc., etc. Not knowing I took two FULL months away from everything because of postpartum depression. With limited resources to help me be successful mentally/physically,” she tweeted.
She continued, “I played the ENTIRE season pregnant last year! All star, and led league (top 3-5) in MPG….didn’t tell a soul.”
Diggins-Smith and her husband Daniel Smith, who wed in 2017, welcomed their son back in April.
The baller also responded to those who claimed she had given up on her team, the Dallas Wings, and hinted that some of that criticism came from within her own organization.
“Having no support from your own organization is unfortunate,” she continued. “The blasts that disrespect mothers (and our rights) in the WNBA is incredible.”
It’s not clear what exactly pushed Diggins-Smith, who currently isn’t playing during the 2019 season despite getting a full salary, to talk now after remaining relatively quiet, but she hinted that she had more to say.
Team president and CEO Greg Bibb said in a statement Saturday that they fully support Diggins-Smith.
“We support our athletes in getting the care they need, whether that’s physical or mental in nature,” Bibb told ESPN in a statement. “We also understand the serious nature of an individual’s mental health.
“Due to the confidentiality associated with seeking mental-health care, unless an athlete provided explicit consent to the psychologist, we are not provided any information regarding individual sessions or related care. As a result of this confidentiality, and out of the respect for privacy, I can’t comment on any individual situation.”
