The F. Gary Gray-directed film has racked up this award season, earning a Critics Choice Award, NAACP Image Award and Screen Actors Guild Award nomination.
What Happened, Miss Simone?, which details legendary singer and civil rights activist Nina Simone’s life is up for Best Documentary Feature.
Creed, the Ryan Coogler directed Rocky-franchise revival film, received only one nomination for Sylvester Stallone for Best Supporting Actor. Besides Straight Outta Compton and Creed—which many assumed would get multiple nominations—perhaps the next biggest Oscar snub went to Star Wars: The Force Awakens (co-starring John Boyega and Lupita Nyong’o), which didn’t receive a nomination for Best Picture. The film, which is already one of the highest grossing box-office movies in history, was honored with five nominations including Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Film Editing, Best Original Score and Best Visual Effects.
R&B singer The Weeknd is up for Best Original Song for “Earned It” from Fifty Shades of Grey.
