Another black woman has come forward to share her story of being profiled while at her apartment pool on July 4th.
Kam Porter, her boyfriend, and her godchildren were enjoying the pool at her apartment complex on our nation’s birthday when the white community manager called the cops after complaining about Porter’s boyfriend’s attire.
And what was the offending piece of clothing? He was wearing socks!
According to Porter, the manager, a white woman identified as Erica Walker, approached and told her boyfriend to remove his socks when dunking them in the water or to leave.
When he refused because, according to Porter it wasn’t specified what ‘proper pool attire’ was, Walker called the police.
In a video posted on Facebook, Porter confronts Walker over the pool rules, asking why they only applied to Black people at the pool. Apparently, the other white people at the pool were seen wearing hats, which were also considered inappropriate pool attire.
“So, she basically said no hats, no shirts, no socks,” Porter said. “We have two men, who are her friends, sitting right here in hats. Two hats. We have a man over here sitting in a hat.”
When a black police officer showed up, he was able to resolve that there was little issue, but Porter left because she said her day had been ruined.
“You called the police on me. That could have went a whole other way. We’ve seen that,” Porter told WREG13. “And I didn’t have anything to say to her. She was very apologetic, I will say that. But at this point, I don’t want an apology. You’ve embarrassed me.”
The company that runs that apartment complex Trilogy Real Estate Group received a complaint from Porter and after an investigation decided to fire Walker.
“After assessing statements from Ms. Porter and determining that this former employee’s actions violate our company’s policies & beliefs, she is no longer employed by Riverset Apartments.”
Porter was not the only black woman to be racially profiled while using her pool on July 4. A North Carolina man was fired from his job after a video of him racially profiling a black woman at their private community pool on July 4 also went viral.
