There are a lot of things in this world that don’t make sense, but legislators in Texas are taking it to a whole new level, as they consider an abortion ban that would subject people seeking the treatment to the death penalty.
According to FOX5DC, House Bill 896 would criminalize abortion and make it a homicide, as such, patients seeking abortions could be sentenced to death if convicted.
How on earth it makes sense to sentence someone – an actual living being – to death for choosing to end a potential of life…is beyond common sense…but the individuals who back these sorts of laws are totally “pro-life,” right?
“How essentially one is okay with subjecting a woman to the death penalty for the exact… to do to her the exact same thing that one is alleging that she is doing to a child,” State Rep. Victoria Neave (D-Dallas) argued.
However, Republican State Rep. Tony Tinderholt argued that it was about “equalizing” the law.
“I think it’s important to remember that if a drunk driver kills a pregnant woman, they get charged twice. If you murder a pregnant woman, you get charged twice. So I’m not specifically criminalizing women. What I’m doing is equalizing the law,” he said.
Still, the bill has clearly caused contention and serious debate, as the hearing in the House Judiciary Committee lasted until 3 a.m. on Tuesday.
According to the news station, the bill is now expected to go before the state House of Representatives for further debate.
