Howard reached fame in the late 80s and early 90s with her hit songs, “Love Under New Management,” “Baby Be Mine,” “Come Share My Love” and “Ain’t Nobody Like You.”
Family Matters actor Darius McCrary will star as the late Gerlad Levert with whom Howard had an on/off relationship with until his death in 2006.
NAACP Image award-nominee Christine Swanson will direct the production for TV One and said it will be a “privilege” to bring the R&B singer’s story to the small screen.
“I knew then that what we were embarking upon was going to be epic in terms of storytelling, nuance, and passion,” Swanson said. “Like myself, Miki Howard is a passionate individual who has a love for life. [Her] music was a backdrop to my youth and now I get to translate her story on screen.”
LisaRaye McCoy, Vanessa Bell Calloway, and Gary Dourdan will also star in the movie.
The Miki Howard Story is slated to air in June of 2016.
